Fireplace Wall Ideas
How to Choose the Right Look?
Your fireplace wall has a unique
- Location
- Layout
- Measurement

AND you won’t want to forget about the fact that your
- Lighting
- Furniture
- Floor and ceiling colors
are all unique too! So there’s no one-size fits all!
FIREPLACE WALL IDEAS WITH TV
Keeping Your Fireplace Wall Balanced!
Especially when you have a TV above your fireplace — regardless of what room it’s in (living room, bedroom, etc) — you’re going to need to keep it balanced. Why? Because there’s a big black box above another big black box!😅

A couple ways to keep this balanced is to have some “equally weighted” items to either side. Above shows a bedroom with this…
MOUNTED FIREPLACE WALL IDEAS
…and below is a living room where we did this as well:
2 artwork pieces + 2 consoles
That’s an easy equation for me to give you, and you’ll need to be careful in your execution.
- You’ll need to choose your wall art intelligently! (I give you 50 real-life, buyable art ideas with rationale HERE!)
- You’ll ideally have your tables/shelves/benches below the artwork matching (mostly – some antiques or vintage items may not be 100% perfectly matching and that’s ok). Decor on top of those can be matching or not.
- BONUS POINTS if you include plants as part of your wall decor! (If that doesn’t make sense to you or you want more info, I wrote in detail about using plants in THIS post!)

Speaking of fireplace walls in rooms in addition to “the usual” in living rooms…
TV FIREPLACE WALL IDEAS
Don’t Forget About Bedrooms!
While the majority of people are focused on their living rooms fireplace walls, I don’t want to forget about those of you who either
- already have a fireplace or
- are looking at adding a fireplace
…in your bedroom! I’ll talk more about electric and mounted fireplaces below (because adding a fireplace element in your bedroom can increase your home value and enjoyment exponentially!).

The above bedroom fireplace wall design is utilizing four (yes 4!) different wall decor types to keep things fresh yet calm in this bedroom!
MODERN FIREPLACE AND TV WALL IDEAS
If You’re Not Hiding Your TV Above Your Fireplace…
If you’re not hiding your TV above your fireplace, then my first choice is to
embrace the black!

Choose modern black abstract wall art to help your “big black box” not stick out like a sore thumb on the wall above your fireplace!
FIREPLACE WALL IDEAS FOR LIVING ROOM
High Contrast vs Less Contrast!
However, if you’re not into such a strong contrast like the above, you might prefer something a little more toned down like we did below.
Here, the texture of the wall art ties in with the living room area rug, the pillows and couch fabric, and even in the flecks in the fireplace stone!

“What To Put On a Wall With a Fireplace?”
Don’t just think about what goes above but what can go on the sides! (Like storage or display shelves below!)

This electric fireplace brings us to our next subject…
Electric Fireplace Wall Ideas
“What About Electric Fireplaces?”
While living rooms (and even some large dining rooms) can certainly have an electric fireplace wall…

…I actually find electric fireplaces being a great addition in bedrooms! (A whole new post I’m going to share soon!)

Electric fireplace wall mount ideas
Focal Point: Using a Fireplace as a Type of Wall Decor!
I talk in this post (The Only 10 Types of Wall Decor You Actually Need to Know!) about how adding a wall-mounted electric fireplace to your room is one of my favorite ways to bring warmth into spaces (like a bedroom) without having to do a typical “gallery wall”…
…imagine how amateurish an average wall full of picture frames would look compared to the stunning professional-looking fireplace + tall bookshelves on either side! Warmth + function + storage = the best of all worlds!👇 I KNOW you want to — and can! — step up your game! 🙂

“What If My Living Room is Small?”
I have a post that focuses on awkward living room layouts (both with fireplace walls and without) that will help you with this!

I also have a second post on that subject, focusing on a client project (she has a fireplace wall conundrum along with layout issues!) in 3 Easy Fixes for Living Room Layouts With Fireplaces!

What I Love About Adding Fireplace Walls In Bedrooms…
Instead of leaving large blank walls or covering them with busy bookshelves or art (while I’m not opposed to both of those done well)…
…you don’t have to install an entire chimney system to get a cozy, warm fireplace in your bedroom! A wall-mounted electric fireplace can look just as “built in” as a wood-burning or gas fireplace, and is truly a relatively easy and inexpensive add for HUGE dividends! (i.e. I don’t know about you but if I’m shopping for a house and it has a fireplace in the bedroom, its value soars above the other contenders!)

When to Hide Your TV vs Let It All Hang Out, Baby!
Personally, I love to hide my TV…
…and I share my reasons in THIS post!
BRICK FIREPLACE MAKEOVER IDEAS
What Did We Do For Our Brick Fireplace Makeover?
One of the many sitting areas in our Big California House looked like this before we moved in…

We share all before and afters + discuss hiring out the painting of an existing brick fireplace HERE! (Why didn’t we DIY it? Gasp! 🙂 )

We actually had two fireplaces in that house: one stone fireplace and one brick fireplace (you can check out what we did to both)!
High Ceiling Fireplace Wall Ideas
Why I Love a Good High Ceiling Fireplace Wall!
One reason I especially love high ceilings on a fireplace wall is because you can go with a longer, sleeker piece of artwork or mirror (or other unique wall decor!) than people with shorter ceilings.

PS: Don’t have high ceilings but thinking about raising them? See our post on how we raised our ceiling! It’ll help give you an idea of what you’re in for and what’s easy/reasonable. 🙂
You can also get help from our Expert Room Design & Layout Guide (we recommend this as your #2 step — usable over and over again for every room in your home! — preferably in conjunction with THIS #1 Step Everyone Should Do! 👈🤗).
Another one of my favorite ways to design a fireplace wall is with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves!👇

Yes, I love this solution in so many spaces that I wrote a whole post for you about floor-to-ceiling bookshelves HERE! 😉
High Ceiling Fireplace Wall
You’ll also need to consider whether your high ceiling is
- Flat across
- Peaked, or
- Asymmetrical!

We show you how we’re treating a client’s asymmetrical living room wall in this post!
MODERN ELECTRIC FIREPLACE WALL IDEAS
Should You Go With an Electric Fireplace, Gas or Wood?
I used to be a hardcore wood-burning-fireplace kinda gal, until we did THIS!

As I mentioned earlier about why I like electric fireplaces, it’s usually just when we want to add a fireplace without having to go through the whoooooole involved mess of adding a chimney. (Sometimes it’s not a big deal, but many times it’s a huge deal.)
Gas fireplaces
- Produce more heat
- Have a more realistic flame
- And just look more realistic overall!
Electric fireplaces are lovely for their
- Ease of install and mounting
- Energy-efficiency
- Safer especially if you have kids or pets
…so you’ll just have to analyze your lifestyle! (97% of people get this wrong and think they know, but they don’t…that’s why they end up hiring me after they’ve tried figuring it out themselves for years.😅 I walk you through how to do that step-by-step HERE!)
FIREPLACE ACCENT WALL IDEAS
When You Have a Stone or Brick Fireplace Accent Wall!

If you already have (or are planning for) a brick or stone fireplace accent wall, you’ll want to keep your proportions in mind.
For example, the above (existing stone fireplace in client project) is combined with a tall ceiling and a TV above the fireplace, so there’s a lot of focus going to that area. Keeping the wall art on the sides subtle helps it not look too crazy busy! (We didn’t even do tables or benches on each side, to keep this room calm and relaxed!)
SHIPLAP FIREPLACE WALL IDEAS
When You Want to Do a Paneled-Type Wall: Shiplap or No?

Another style people love for a fireplace accent wall is doing some type of wall paneling, whether it’s board-and-batten, molding, wainscoting, or a horizontal (or vertical!) shiplap style!

FIREPLACE ACCENT WALL PAINT IDEAS
When You Don’t Want White…
Many of the fireplace accent wall paint ideas I’ve shown you so far have been variations on white or cream, but you can go with other colors such as black…

…or modern grey and/or plaster and concrete fireplace accent walls!
PS: I love the black above especially if you’re wanting your TV to blend in above your fireplace. I talk more about that HERE!

MODERN FIREPLACE ACCENT WALL IDEAS
I Love Bookshelves, Yes I Do…

Modern doesn’t have to mean cold or sterile; you can easily warm up a fireplace wall in a more modern way with the right style of bookshelves!

If you’d like help sorting out your bookshelf design, I have a (free for now!) post HERE all about bookshelves!
FIREPLACE WALL IDEAS
“What if you have windows on each side of the fireplace?”
If you have high windows on each side of your fireplace, you can still hang art on them like the below. (This client is waiting to do a major window replacement throughout the home, so this is their temporary setup. Proof that your temporary doesn’t have to look haphazard…it can still look clean and cozy with the right mix of casual elegance!😘)
