Looking for fresh laundry room decor ideas? You’re in the right place! We’re sharing everything from upleveled laundry room ideas to organization (and bonus design resources)!
Why on earth should we care about “decor” in our laundry rooms, of all places?
Whether you choose to run a small load every day or have a laundry marathon day every week, by the time you wash, dry and fold, you and I are spending over 480 hours per year on laundry!
Can you see how dangerously close that is to thousands of hours over a few years?
I don’t know about you, dear reader, but anywhere I spend thousand of hours of my precious life, I want that place to feel goooood!
And one of the best ways to feel good is to have the optimal environment around you.
Believe it or not, you CAN make laundry time a fairly good-feelin’ time! (No alcohol needed.)
Today, let’s you and I talk about how to decorate your laundry room (no matter the size!) into not only an efficient but beautiful space. (Tip: you can also grab our Free Design Mini-guide HERE!)
I’ll also answer popular questions such as
- “What about if I have a small laundry room with a top load washing machine?“
- “How to decorate a basement laundry room?”
- “How to decorate laundry room shelves?“
- “How to decorate a laundry room?“
- “How can I make a laundry room look nice?“
- “What do you put on wall of a laundry room?”
Let’s do this!
laundry room art
#13: Artwork!
I’m talking about artwork first because
- It’s one of the fastest and simplest ways to set your “vibe.”
- It’s not “the usual” thing to do in a laundry room, and
- It’s possible in almost ANY laundry room or closet!
If you have a wall, hang it up. If you have a shelf, you can prop up artwork on it.
The artwork will warm up your space (and just automatically gives you a good feel)!
It’s such an easy decor “fix” that so many people don’t take advantage of.
My #1 Tip:
Make sure you love the art!
(Just because it was $3 at Goodwill doesn’t mean it’s a bargain, and just because it was $137,000 at a fancy gallery doesn’t mean you have to like it in order to have “good taste.”)
When it comes to artwork, anything goes! I say it’s like wine: “If you like it, get it.” No snobs allowed! 😉
(Artwork from your children or anything extra meaningful gets bonus points! You’re doing laundry for these people who love you…remember the love!)
You can go with one big statement piece, or line them up like above!

#12: A Mirror!
I love this for laundry room decor because it’s unexpected AND…
…especially if you have a dark laundry room space (as many of us do), a mirror helps bounce your light around!
(Grab my Expert Room Layout & Design Guide for full design help!)
Actually, I can’t believe I never took a picture showing this while we lived in our big California house, but…
…perpendicular to our laundry room wall, I had A GIANT WALL MIRROR! 🙂 (That room had previously been so dark…that mirror made the room look twice as big!)
laundry room decor IDEAS
#11: Large Trays
It feels like everyone on Pinterest/Instagram (social media in general?) has a frontload washing machine (including us!). And while we love ours (never had mold issues!), we know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea.
(Speaking of tea, you can see how we store ours HERE!)
So how would I decorate a small laundry room if I had a top load washing machine? I’d start with a large woven tray on top of the dryer to corral all of the items you use when washing clothes! Putting the items inside a tray goes a long way to making utilitarian items look less messy and cluttered.
MODERN LAUNDRY ROOM DECOR
#10: Plants
Should this be my #1? It’s so hard to choose, so here it is at #10 (the ideas just keep getting better)!
Plants not only clean your air but make you happier and add LIFE to your laundry room! Try it and see! 😉
PS: It doesn’t have to be a potted plant. It can be as simple as a few stems in water that you change out to be fresh with the change of seasons.
laundry room wall decor
#9: Hooks
Hooks are a great item to add to the wall of a laundry room as they not only 1) add function to your room but can 2) add a good-looking design element!
Basement laundry room ideas
#8: Laundry Room Shelving
We’ve written The Only 5 Types of Laundry Room Shelves You Need!
Shelves can make for the ultimate functional decor. You can place artwork and store items on the shelves to make them both look good and serve a purpose.
Maybe you have a small laundry room and want an ultra functional space, in which I recommend our uber-functional Laundry Cabinet. (I’d especially recommend this to those who do their laundry in an unfinished basement, as it includes shelves that make it so your clean clothes never touch the ground while being transferred around!)
If you have a front load washing machine, I’d do shelving above the washer and dryer to store your items!
laundry room wallpaper
#7: Dress Up The Walls!
Have you thought of adding plank walls, molding or even wallpaper to spice up your laundry room walls?
Even something as subtle as the beadboard walls below is inexpensive because it’s used so little (thanks to the windows, doors and upper cabinets), but the details give so much character:
Here’s an even more minimalist-modern version of a vertical beadboard-type look:
If you’re not into those wall looks, try wallpaper! The choices today are SO MUCH BETTER than they were even a decade ago.
I remember when my wallpaper-happy grandmother predicted years ago that wallpaper would “come back”…
…and of course she was right! 🙂
Here’s someone else’s design that uses both wallpaper and paint (to be discussed below):
SMALL laundry room decor
#6: Stylish Throw-Away or “Holders”
I often find it a necessity to have a place to throw away small things like rocks, shells, lint or even coins that I find in my children’s pockets! (Although whaddaya think, should mamas take the coins as payment? haha! I prefer hugs…)
For the throw-away things like string and lint, a small wastebasket like my favorite one works great in a laundry room if you have the space!
If you’re really tight on space, then I’d suggest a small decorative vase, basket or other beautiful container that you can place on top of your dryer or shelf.
modern LAUNDRY ROOM DECOR IDEAS
#5: Laundry Baskets
Baskets for your laundry do not have to be the standard rectangular plastic laundry basket…
laundry room rugs
#4: Rugs
The right rug is like a soft-n-cushy artwork for your floor!
Rugs can give your space personality. If you choose to use a neutral rug such as jute or seagrass, it gives your room warmth and texture. (An added bonus is it’s something soft and not cold underfoot while you fold your laundry.
laundry room lighting ideas
#3: Statement Lighting!
A laundry room is the perfect place to try out a unique statement light fixture!
It can be textured, elegant, or fun and funky…choose what YOU love!
Don’t forget about adding a lamp or accent lighting on the wall! (Especially if you hate overhead lighting or need extra lighting to be able to turn on to really see those stains.)
LAUNDRY ROOM colors
#2: Paint (and the S Word)!
Whether you want a dramatic dark and moody color or a fun Moroccan-inspired stencil instead of wallpaper, paint is SUCH an inexpensive option and can completely transform a space!
The S-Word:
I’m serious on how you can try “stenciling” over your walls instead of wallpaper. It’s less expensive, doesn’t peel, and is SO FLEXIBLE and easy to change later on. Check out these ones I just saw the other day as I was helping a friend look for a temporary solution in her space. She thinks she wants a Spanish tile eventually but changes her mind so often that I suggested trying an easy stencil first to see how she likes living with it for a bit!
As someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s with awful stencil work people would do along the borders of their ceilings, I never thought I’d be searching for wall stencils ever in my life 🙂 haha…(but these aren’t your great-aunt’s stencil ideas)!
