Spanish Wall Art: Which Style Should You Get?

Looking for Spanish Revival, Mediterranean, or just good solid Spanish wall art to give the right look & feel to your home? I’ve narrowed down Spanish-style paintings and prints, artwork vs decor, and even vintage to modern styles!

We have a project coming up where — through my Design Analysis — I’ve decided that at least one piece of “Spanish-flavored” art is going to solve one of the (many) goals for this client home!

However, if you try doing a search for “Spanish art” yourself, you’re going to be faced with

a number of VASTLY different style options!

For example, are you wanting a vintage print from an actual Spanish artist vs a more modern-abstract Mediterranean-style painting. vs wall art that’s more colorful (or bright? or moody? or subdued?)?

And do you want Spaaaaanish Spanish wall art OR are you really meaning Southern California-style Spanish wall art OR Mediterranean OR Spanish Revival or…?

Do you see the conundrum so many people run into? 🙂

So…which to choose?

Should you go more traditional or modern? Vintage or abstract? I’ll help you figure it out below!

I’m about to walk you (fast!) through the different options so you can see what you’re up against…

…and which style fits your need — I love helping you make these design decisions EASY! 🙂

Neutral but Bright!

Many people think of Spanish artwork as needing to be dark and moody, but that’s so not true!

Fresh, light and bright is possible too! The below is timeless and perfectly subtle.

Wall Art Decision: Originals vs Prints?

Many original oil paintings will be more expensive than prints, but you’ll have a 100% unique piece of art as well as aspects (such as the luscious original texture of the brush strokes to enjoy). Many people may not care about original art but when you have it, you’ll understand how much depth it can give your space!

Travel Prints: Try to Keep Them Personal If You Can!

I don’t like a lot of cheesy travel prints, but this one is lovely because Santander is not one of the most common places and so it feels fresh & unique! So if you’ve been to more out-of-the-way places in Spain and can hone in on those, it personalizes your home so much more!

Choosing your artwork isn’t just personal preference — it’s also about

  1. Your entire home strategy (if you haven’t done this Essential #1 Step I created for readers like you, you must! You’re welcome! 😘)
  2. Next, you’ll want to follow your Room Layout & Design Guide to even see where your artwork will go, what it’s going to show against, what different views from different parts of the room you’ll get, etc.

In most of my projects, TEXTURE is one of my favorite words…so if you’re not sure which type of art you should get and you like my design styles and techniques, go with wall art that is textural! 🙂

You Can’t Go Wrong With Bougainvillea… 😉

It’s all over southern Spain as well as southern California for a reason: it grows well in these places!

So artwork with a bit (or a lot) of bougainvillea will be spot on flavah! 😘

When To Go Fun and/or Playful?

This would be incredibly unique (chef’s kiss) used in a kids bedroom, bathroom or playroom for a more fun-yet-upscaled child-friendly space!

(Or if you just plain like it yourself in a main space like a kitchen, I can totally see this working — especially if you have Spanish or Portuguese pottery on display! I can envision that working beautifully, feeling cheerful, warm and welcoming!)

“Fun” Doesn’t Always Have To Be Uber-colorful!

Following up from the above example, the below has a more subtle color (blue is calming!) and would work well in a space picking up on more blues and whites, for example.

Spanish Drawings

Black & white drawings can bring a beautiful mix of modern + timeless to your “room in question”! 🙂

This one in particular I like for the more vintage architectural hand-drawn feel.

Spanish-style Art: Don’t Forget About Photography!

While for this particular project I’m staying away from photographs for the specific areas we’re focusing on for this client home, Spanish-style photography can be a great option you don’t want to forget (especially if you’re looking for something more modern for your walls.

I give two thumbs up for Spanish-style photography as art on your walls when its taken from your own travels!

You can go from super casual…

…to super chic architecture! (See the stairway below.)

Taking photos of doors is one of the easiest ways to get pics that make you feel like a “real” photographer when you get home. 😉 The architecture is doing 99% of the work for you, so use it!

For Structure In Your Room, Go With Architectural Photography!

Speaking of doors, stairways from unique Spanish architecture is always going to add good interest and substantial feels for a room!

Be Careful With “Labeled” Art!

I’m not a fan of “labeled” art prints in most rooms (you know, like signs that say “Eat!” in your dining room)…

…but ones like the below can be fun and bring energy to the room in certain instances such as an office, media room, or even a bathroom!

What Will We Choose For This Particular Project?

While we haven’t finalized it yet, we’re currently leaning towards

  • a more neutral palette but still with some “life” in it (a.k.a a hint of green plants because that’s how I roll),
  • most likely will include a white or cream-colored Spanish architectural building (whether in foreground or background)
  • not too light and not too dark — it will be the Goldilocks of Spanish-style Wall Art 🙂
  • something personal for the client (this takes time to really hit on what makes her/him say YES, WE ARE ALMOST SALIVATING WITH EXCITEMENT TO LOOK AT THAT FOR YEARS! 🙂 (You see my standards are high in client satisfaction…drooling is a good sign.)

There are two reasons we’re going in this direction for the client and those are

  1. location of where this home is (I love having artwork that reflects where you are, in a well-done way)
  2. personal history of the individual/family living in this home.

For example, I mention in my post with 50+ Unique Wall Art Ideas that we did some artwork in client homes that reflected some Southern California spots that were meaningful to them, such as Santa Barbara and Big Sur.
