To the Clients Who Don't Know "What Style Am I?"

I recently had a client who didn’t know “what style” she liked. And she had a very unique, challenging space because of a number of factors I won’t get into right now.

She started out saying she was traditional and didn’t like modern. Yet, when I showed her some traditional designs in line with what she said she liked, she didn’t actually like them. And she literally could not find any pictures on the internet that showed what she liked.

Has this happened to you? There’s no shame in it! It’s hard to define sometimes!

So, I spent hours coming up with my own design. “No room on the internet that shows your style?” I say. “Let’s create our own!”

I forgot to mention that the added level of difficulty is in using her existing couch, coffee table, and a side table! I definitely didn’t have a blank slate–I needed to start with those 3 pieces and then try to up-level the design to what she liked. She even later admitted she wished she hadn’t rushed to buy furniture and that she’d hired me earlier.

“It’s okay!” I said. “I’m here now and we will do what we can to make it work!”

I say on my Instagram profile that we help you “work with what you have!” This is true with everything from your kitchen layout to the direction your house is facing to the furniture you have existing. Sure, it adds levels of difficulty and constraint to what we can do, but it doesn’t mean all is lost! 🙂 I ALWAYS think we can make it work. I’m like a bulldog in that respect.

Another client recently was bemoaning the most awkward corner built a certain way in her home. And truly, it was difficult. And I could be tempted to commiserate with her, but a spark inside me fires up and says,

“No! We WILL find a way! There is always a way! It looks bleak, but we WILL figure it out!” 🙂

And we come up with solutions. Sometimes even more than 1, 2, or 3. Every space is different.

Part of me hates the constrictions. Why can’t someone just give me a beautifully build, perfectly-proportioned room with zero existing furniture and an unlimited budget? 🙂

That is a Dream World, and we don’t live in it. Thus, sometimes you need to pull in a bulldog design professional like Jess (with her engineer husband who is INVALUABLE to what we do!) to grab onto your space and not let it go until we’ve beat it into gorgeous, stunning submission! 🙂 🙂 🙂

OK, I’m getting too excited and dramatic. (It happens.) We don’t beat it. We massage it. Sometimes it’s a relaxing massage, and sometimes it’s a tiny woman walking on top of your back. But we will work the kinks out! 🙂
